Portishead returns from a ten-year hiatus with eleven new tracks that are
sure to please long-time fans, and newcomers alike. In the early 1990s, before
triphop was even given a name, Portishead was right there in the fray, defining
this new genre, amongst the ranks of Massive Attack, Tricky, and others. But
Portishead's take was different still: Unlike many of their contemporaries, they
fused jazz, house, and ethereal sounds into their work, broadening their
audience appeal. Alternative rockers, electronic ravers, and classic breakbeat
enthusiasts all took to their sound. In recent years, the music industry has
watched Gnarls Barkley, The Gorillaz, and others follow their lead - and thrive.
